North Carolina Man Blacks Out Behind the Wheel of His Car and Kills Father of Four Girls – Found Guilty of Criminal Charges, What About Civil Liability?

It took jurors three hours to return a guilty verdict in a case where a man, Lee Hutchins, crossed the center line on Highway 64 and killed the father of four young girls. Hutchins was tried on charges of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

This wreck that killed Michael Piercy also injured his wife and his two youngest daughters. Hutchins was sentenced to just over a year to three years for two of the charges and for the second assault charge; Hutchins received a suspended sentence with five years probation. The Judge ordered Hutchins not to drive during the five-year period.

The wreck, according to Hutchins attorney, was largely related to his medical condition. According to records, Hutchins blacked out behind the wheel of his car due to low blood sugar just prior to crossing the center line.  [Read more…]

Good and Bad News for Residents of Charlotte North Carolina – More Emergency Rooms Opening Around Charlotte

According to WCNC, Carolinas Healthcare System has been opening new emergency rooms around Charlotte and plans to open more in the coming months. Charlotte has seen the addition of these new facilities in Steele Creek and SouthPark, and as recently as last week, in Harrisburg off of Rocky River Road.

As population size continues to grow in the Charlotte area, the need for more efficient health care and especially emergency services continues to grow. So while these facilities are within a mere fifteen minute drive of each other, the demand is still there.

What does this mean for Charlotte residents? If you are injured, you have more places to go and the commute could be even closer. Keep in mind that if you are seriously injured, you should be treated at a large hospital. Some of these new emergency room facilities, such as the facility in Harrisburg, will not be outfitted with the right tools to treat traumas. [Read more…]

North Carolina Budget Cuts Could Lead to Dangerous Roads and Serious Injuries

Most often when we think about car or truck accidents, we imagine the parties actually involved in the wreck, not the State Highway patrol or the North Carolina Department of Transportation Crews. WBTV, however, recently discussed how state budget cuts may impact the safety of officers, state employees, and drivers in general.

The issue begins with the roads and those workers that maintain the roads, making repairs where needed, insuring the safety of bridges and the stability of guardrails, and maintaining the areas around the road to increase visibility. A cut in the budget for the NCDOT crews would mean less staff to keep our roads safe; a problem that NC doesn’t need according to the highway patrol, who claim that they already respond to approximately 4,800 wrecks a year on interstates 485, 85 and 77.

How will a budget cut affect drivers in North Carolina? The thought of less construction zones may sound like music to your ears, but let’s put it into perspective. [Read more…]

Tropical Storm Arthur Threatens Fourth of July Holiday Fun – What’s in Store for the Carolinas

Tropical Storm Arthur is this year’s first named storm of the Atlantic. Tropical Storms, with winds ranging between 39-73mph, still pose a threat to the safety of those within its reach. This storm could be bad news for travelers during the upcoming July 4th Holiday weekend due to the increase in road traffic and the potential safety hazards.

As the storm continues along the coast, the Weather Channel has forecast Arthur to reach the Carolina’s sometime between Thursday and Friday. Hopefully, Arthur will die down before it ever reaches the Carolina Coast, allowing for safe and fun times as we celebrate our Nation’s Independence. However, those people enjoying the beach on this holiday weekend should still take precaution; tropical storms, even weak ones, can cause high surfs, rip currents, strong winds, and flooding.

If you are planning to vacation this weekend, especially if you are traveling towards the Carolina Coast, make sure to stay up to date with the latest Hurricane News. Should conditions begin to worsen, make sure your gas tank is full, you have cash on hand, and you are aware of the evacuation route. Most importantly, look for posted signs or flags on the beach warning swimmers of the rip currents. Heed the directions of those safety personnel on the beach and keep your loved ones safe.
