South Carolina’s Rising Car Accident Fatalities

Sobering data released from the National Traffic Highway Safety Administration revealed that in July of 2015, car accident fatalities were up 7.7 percent across the country. South Carolina’s state figures indicated a year-over-year traffic death increase of slightly more than double that: 16 percent.

South Carolinians’ lack of regard for roadway safety was the number one contributing factor, said S.C. Highway Patrol officials, citing that the typical causes of a fatal accident in the state were avoidable.

Anyone who suffers injuries, or loses a loved one in such an accident may be entitled to compensation for their injuries, loss and suffering. South Carolina roads may be dangerous, but some form of protection and care should be available to those who travel on them.

Police Body Cam Footage and North Carolina’s New Law

In the wake of several police incidents that hampered public trust over the past few years, many precincts and state law enforcement agencies moved in lockstep toward installing body cameras on officers. If allegations of police abuse arose, the theory went, either side could help prove their case with the police body cam footage.

Good luck with that in North Carolina now. On Monday, July 11, North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory signed House Bill 972 into law. This bill makes obtaining body camera or dash camera footage from a police officer next to impossible.

Prescription Limits in North Carolina Workers’ Comp Claims

In an effort to reduce workers’ compensation costs for state employees, North Carolina legislators examined the possibility of creating a drug formulary for the program. A drug formulary limits covered medicinal cost claims to a list of preferred prescription drugs. Both generic and brand-name prescriptions are often listed, with the sole goal of identifying medications that are effective at treating the condition in question while providing a good value.

Other states like Texas, Washington, California, Ohio and Oklahoma have already adopted drug formularies, somewhat indicating a bipartisan interest in the issue. North Carolina has such a program in place for Medicaid but investigating the issue concerning expansion to state workers’ compensation programs.
